Lady in a white dress and a black bodice

Karol Bechon

A lady standing in an indistinct interior is wearing a dress with a “crinoline à coudes”, according to the fashion of the mid-18th century. The bodice is richly decorated with embroidery, while the neckline and the sleeves are made of lace. A royal blue curtain frames the image, held back on the left with a gold tasselled cord revealing part of the wall covering.
The lady’s hand points downwards, possibly a gesture of communication. The background with the curtain is designed according to the usual arrangement of the interior. Karol (also “Charles”) Bechon came from Dresden to the court of the Polish king Stanislaus II August Poniatowski, for whom he worked until his death. This miniature originated in the court environment and probably depicts a Polish noblewoman.
