Jean-Baptiste Couvelet

Couvelet was the son of a Maître Tailleur and travelled to Paris to train as an artist, probably with Jacques-Louis David. He was a friend of the miniaturist Jean-Baptiste Ponce Lambert, who also came from the Ardennes and was apprenticed to Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin. In the early 1790s, he returned to Charleville, where he married in 1795. In 1798, he was employed as a drawing teacher at the Ecole Centrale des Ardennes and in 1828, he published a handbook on drawing.
